Barkdust
The principal benefit of barkdust is the rich content of nutrients. Having a new layer of barkdust applied will reduce the need for inorganic additives. Barkdust helps plants survive better where soil quality is poor. Modern plants need a high level of organic matter to establish quickly. This cant be provided by fertilizer alone. Compost contains high levels of organic matter, boosting the physical condition of the soil. It makes it less bulky so that roots can penetrate it more easily allowing better airflow and because of its dark color it absorbs heat from the sun which improves conditions for germination and growth.
Another great benefit of barkdust is its moisture retention. This means you have to water your flower beds and gardens less often and your plants and shrubs are not dry at root level. Barkdust can also be used as an additional compliment to reduce soil erosion. It absorbs surface water and provides excellent protection from the wind and rain. It also starves weeds from the light source they need to flourish. |
